The town of Carefree is located in the rugged and scenic desert north of Scottsdale. Carefree was first conceived in the mid-1940's by K.T. Palmer and Tom Darlington as a planned community. Land purchases were made beginning in 1955 and the first buildings went up in 1958.

The emphasis was on leisure, with names such as Easy Street, Tranquil Trail, and Ho and Hum Roads. The town’s motto is "Home of cowboys and caviar, where the Old West meets the new." Carefree has an intimate small-town feel.

Homes in Carefree tend to be upscale single-family custom homes on large lots of one acre or more. The homesites are mostly rugged natural desert terrain, and residents enjoy (or endure, depending on your state of mind!) frequent interaction with natural desert wild life, including havalinas (wild hogs), coyotes, bob cats, snakes, rabbits, roadrunners, and more.

Carefree has the largest sun dial in the Western Hemisphere (photoed above). It stretches 62 feet and points to the North Star.

Carefree has gained a reputation for its beauty -- the unique rock outcroppings and boulders visible for miles -- its nationally-known residents and visitors and shopping and recreational amenities. The art galleries, cultural events, unique shops and restaurants attest to their fine reputation.

Carefree and Cave Creek are adjoining "sister" towns and share many facilities, but even the casual observer will quickly notice their distinctiveness from one another. While Cave Creek enjoys a reputation for celebrating and preserving its illustrious past, Carefree's growing prominence as a hub of contemporary southwestern art and culture is equally deserved.
