Apache Junction, ARIZONA

Apache Junction is a desert community nestled in the shadows of the Superstition Mountains, 2,070 feet above sea level and 35 miles directly east of Phoenix on Highway 60 (Superstition Freeway). It is the easternmost community in the Phoenix-Mesa metropolitan area. The city currently encompasses 36.5 square miles with a year round population estimated at 42,000. Each year the city welcomes over 35,000 seasonal residents, increasing the population from mid-October to mid-April to over 77,000. Although only incorporated in 1978, Apache Junction has a long and colorful history. Its past boasts everything from early Indian cultures and Spanish Conquistadors to frontier explorers, mining camps, and the convergence of labor and supplies for the construction of the Roosevelt Dam, 30 miles east on the historic Apache Trail.

With its mining and transportation roots in the late 19th- and early 20th-centuries, Apache Junction did not develop a central downtown but spread slowly along the Apache Trail, centering around the old Superstition Inn in the 1950s and 1960s. The city is actively working to develop the area as a 21st-century centerpiece for combined retail, office and downtown residential living – all consistent with Apache Junction’s southwestern, territorial feel.

Despite its rapid growth, Apache Junction remains a city of wide-open spaces, and the gateway to the natural splendors that Teddy Roosevelt compared to the “grandeur of the Alps”. Canyons of dizzying heights, azure blue lakes, authentic ghost towns, stage coach stations, and rich Western history all lie minutes away, and somewhere within maze of giant Saguaros and box canyons lies the legendary Lost Dutchman gold mine!

With its hometown, rural feel, and accessibility to protected wilderness and the delights of metropolitan areas, Apache Junction remains the true West that people come here to enjoy.

If your tastes run more towards luxury and world class golf, you have only to look seven miles east to our sister city of Gold Canyon and its shops and spas.

Gold Canyon

Gold Canyon Ranch was created from a working cattle ranch at the foot of the southeastern region of the Superstition Mountains. In the 1970s Dinamount Development Corp. assembled the property, and in the 1980s it built the Gold Canyon Resort Hotel that today is the home of two of Arizona’s most notable golf courses – Dinosaur Mountain and Sidewinder.

Gold Canyon has attracted residents from all over the world who call this unincorporated piece of Pinal County home. Over 10,000 people live in the area and love having the historic Superstition Mountains in their backyard. Gold Canyon offers a change of pace from the hectic lifestyle found in most urban centers of the valley.

Some wonderful hiking trails are accessible from Kings Ranch Road and Peralta Trail. Horseback riding is allowed and the area is still rural enough so that nature is the attraction.
